They are usually tall, about two feet and two inches with rectangular bodies.

You have probably heard that German Shepherds are considered the best police and military service dogs.

They are also taken as search and rescue dogs, and drug detectors, which are all the characteristics that make them popular

  • bigger and more powerful
  • less hairy and doesn’t shed
  • smaller and more suitable for apartment life
  • lower maintenance – less physical exercise and suitable for an inexperienced owner
  • less aggressive, good with strangers, kids, and other pets
  • cool and calm, but bigger
  • can handle freezing temperatures

If you are looking for these additional qualities, you can take a look at the following breeds that look like German Shepherds.

1: Belgian Shepherds

As their name suggests, Belgian Shepherds originate from Belgium.

You may have known them as the Belgian sheepdog or Chien de Berger Belge.

These are medium to large-sized herding dogs that are very popular due to their intelligence.

Just like German Shepherds, they are quite strong and energetic dogs, making them ideal for tracking, obedience, and search operations.

All these qualities are important for excellent watchdogs or police dogs.

When daily routine is in question, Belgian shepherds need daily walks and exercise, especially if you want them to do well in an apartment.

Also, a firm owner is needed so we would not recommend this breed to an inexperienced owner.

They can be good with children but only if well trained and socialized at an early stage.
